ABOUT ALOPECIA AREATA TREATMENT FOR MEN
Alopecia Areata is a an unpredictable autoimmune skin disease that results in the loss of hair on the scalp and other areas on the body. The condition is common but very challenging and capricious disease affects just under 2 percent of the world's population. Due to the fact that much of the public is still not aware of the term alopecia areata, the disease can have a profound impact on one’s life and functional status, both at work, play, and school.
With alopecia areata, affected hair follicles are mistakenly targeted by a person’s own immune system (white blood cells), with the result being the arrest of the hair growth stage. Alopecia areata often starts with one or more small, round, and smooth bald patches on the scalp and can escalate to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).
Alopecia areata occurs in both men and women of all ages and races; however, onset most often begins in childhood and can be psychologically damaging. Although not life-threatening, alopecia areata is usually life-altering, and its sudden onset, recurrent episodes, and unpredictable course have a significant psychological impact on the lives of those affected by this disease.
What causes alopecia areata is not exactly known, or why only some areas of the scalp are affected by this hereditary disease. Many believe that the immune system has an inherited factor that triggers it to react against particular tissues of its own body. These “triggers” can come from infection, medications, and environmental factors. Fortunately, this disease does not actually destroy the hair follicles, but only “halts” their growth. The growth of hair returns to normal when the immune reaction goes away.
